Discover Forres: A Cultural and Heritage Journey

Nestled in the heart of Moray, Scotland, Forres is a town rich in history and brimming with local charm. As you plan your next stay at The Loft Glamping and Camping, we’re excited to share with you a new initiative that highlights the vibrant culture and heritage of Forres, making your visit even more special.

This summer, the Forres Area Community Trust (FACT) and Forres Heritage Trust (FHT) have launched a brand-new leaflet titled ‘Forres Connected – Culture and Heritage.’ This informative booklet is designed to guide both locals and visitors through the many cultural treasures and events that Forres has to offer. The leaflet is more than just a guide; it’s your passport to exploring the unique heritage of this remarkable town.

The ‘Forres Connected – Culture and Heritage’ booklet features a detailed town map and highlights key landmarks that you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, or local stories, the leaflet is packed with information to enhance your exploration of Forres.

Funded by a generous £20,000 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between FACT, FHT, and other local organizations, groups, and businesses. Together, they’ve created a vibrant programme of activities designed to bring Forres’s rich history to life from April to September 2024.

Events to Look Forward To

The Forres Connected initiative isn’t just about maps and landmarks, it’s about experiencing the town’s culture firsthand. The programme includes guided walks and tours, engaging talks, traditional entertainment, and tailor-made activity packages perfect for both day-trippers and those enjoying a longer stay. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a full week, there’s something for everyone.

Among the groups involved in this exciting project are the Highland Youth Theatre, Findhorn Bay Arts, and the Forres Area Business Association, among others. These organisations are work together to ensure a vibrant program filled with activities, including Grant Park’s centennial celebrations coming up this weekend. More about that shortly!

Visit the Heritage Information Hub

A key feature of the initiative is the new Heritage Information Hub located in Forres Town Hall. Open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm, the hub is the perfect place to start your journey. Here, you can gather information, speak with knowledgeable volunteers, and plan your itinerary to make the most of your time in Forres.

Celebrating 100 Years of Grant Park: A Forres Gem

As part of our ongoing celebration of the rich culture and heritage of Forres, we’re thrilled to spotlight the centenary of Grant Park – a beloved community treasure that has been at the heart of Forres for 100 years.

A Gift to the Community

Grant Park was generously gifted to the town by Sir Alexander Grant, one of Forres’s most famous sons, in 1924. Spanning 32 acres, this beautiful green space has been a focal point for community events, recreation, and relaxation for generations. The park’s natural arena, bordered by Cluny Hill woodlands, St Leonard’s Road, and the High Street, makes it an ideal location for both everyday activities and special events.

The park’s northern edge is graced by a traditional floral garden and a sunken garden, both of which are meticulously tended by the volunteer group, Forres In Bloom. These gardens are the pride of the town and have earned Forres numerous accolades, including a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

A Hub of Activity

Over the years, Grant Park has been home to a wide range of facilities and attractions, including a cricket pitch, a food kiosk, floral displays, memorial trees, a wishing well, and a fenced play area for children. The park’s large natural arena is particularly famous for hosting significant events, such as the Forres Highland Games and the European Pipe Band Championships.

In recognition of its 100 years in the community, a special event titled ‘Grant Park 100’ will take place on 24 August 2024. This event will celebrate the park’s centenary, offering a day of festivities that will honour its rich history and the many memories made within its boundaries.

Forres In Bloom: Keeping the Park Beautiful

One of the standout features of Grant Park is its stunning floral displays, maintained by the dedicated volunteers of Forres In Bloom. Since its inception in 1990, Forres In Bloom has worked tirelessly to enhance the town’s beauty, ensuring that both residents and visitors can enjoy a vibrant, colourful environment year-round.

Despite challenges, such as the closure of the council’s greenhouse in 2013, the group has continued to uphold the high standards set by the community, transforming a former council depot into their base of operations. Their efforts have kept Forres blooming, earning the town numerous awards and the admiration of all who visit.

As you wander through the park during your stay at The Loft, Camping and Glamping, you’ll notice how particularly beautiful the gardens are this year. The team’s commitment to conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable planting not only keeps the park looking its best but also ensures that it remains a welcoming haven for future generations.
